Al-Zawayda Championship: More Than Football Competitions Combining Loyalty and Sports for the Martyrs

The Muhammad Abu Zaid Activation Championship in Al-Zawayda brings together 12 teams from the Central Governorate in football competitions aimed at honoring the martyrs and reviving sports in Gaza despite the destruction caused by the war.

In a scene reflecting Palestinians' attachment to life and sports despite difficult circumstances, the Muhammad Abu Zaid Activation Championship kicked off at the Al-Zawayda Stadium, sponsored by the Sons of Faris Abu Zaid Company. Twelve teams from the Central Governorate clubs participate in the tournament, with strong competitions among veteran players. The first day of the competition witnessed intensity and excitement, attended by sports figures and the board of the Shabab Al-Zawayda Club, headed by Hisham Abu Zaid. In match results, the Al-Ribat and Al-Masdar teams qualified from the first group, and the Shabab Al-Zawayda and Al-Salah teams from the second group. The matches were officiated by a refereeing crew accredited by the Palestinian Football Association, led by former international referee Saud Hamad. The tournament aims to honor the name of the martyr Muhammad Abu Zaid and provide an outlet for athletes amid damage to sports facilities and reduced available spaces. The competitions carry a message of hope and resilience, affirming that sports in Gaza can still create spaces for hope even in the toughest conditions.
