Al-Sharaa in New York: I understand what happened on 7.10, it's not logical that this dictates policy toward Syria

He also revealed that Syria and Israel were close to a political settlement, but Israel withdrew.

In his remarks, he addressed the issue of negotiations with Israel and the status of the Golan Heights. Al-Sharaa clarified that he understands the significance of the October 7 events but argued that it is not logical for this to dictate Israeli policy toward Syria. He emphasized that "the Golan Heights is Syrian territory under full UN recognition" and stated firmly that there is no room for discussion or debate regarding the territories. Additionally, al-Sharaa revealed that in the past the countries were very close to a political settlement: "We reached almost 90% of an agreement with Israel, but then Israel chose to withdraw from it due to a series of reasons and excuses it presented."
