After the British, is it France's turn? The new demand from Netanyahu
Against the backdrop of the British consulate in Jerusalem ceasing its previous format of operations, national camp organizations have turned to Prime Minister Netanyahu with a demand to close the French consulate in Jerusalem, while adopting the Foreign Ministry's recommendation from last year. The organizations claim that France is acting against Israel through sanctions, investigations, and activities at the UN, and they note alleged support for terrorist elements by the consulate.
National camp organizations, including victims of sanctions from foreign countries, have turned to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with a demand to close the French consulate general in Jerusalem. The appeal comes against the backdrop of the British consulate in Jerusalem ceasing its previous format of operations. The organizations call for adopting the Foreign Ministry's recommendation from last year, arguing that there is no justification for granting France different treatment given its actions against Israel. They cite the promotion of sanctions, the opening of investigations against Israelis with French citizenship on charges of 'genocide', and President Macron's activities at the UN. The organizations mention a study by the Jerusalem Center for Applied Policy (JCAP) revealing that the French consulate launched a book glorifying the terrorist Leila Khaled, who was involved in airplane hijackings. It is further claimed that the consulate supports an 'educational' center in Silwan managed by terrorists, granted a scholarship to a student who called for the murder of Jews, and assisted the family of a Hamas operative. Meir Deutsch, CEO of Regavim, called for closing the 'French embassy to Palestine' operating from Jerusalem.
