After declaring he would retire: Advisor to Erdogan claims he will run again

Mehmet Ucum, the legal advisor to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, predicts that the next elections in Turkey will be held on April 16, 2028, and claims that Erdogan will run in them for the last time. The date carries symbolic significance as the anniversary of the referendum that adopted the presidential system. Erdogan previously stated he would not run again but added that a new constitution is needed.

Mehmet Ucum, the head of the legal council of the Turkish presidency, said today (Thursday) that he expects the elections in the country to be held on April 16, 2028, and claimed that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will run in them for the last time. The date Ucum mentioned is the anniversary of the referendum in which the presidential system was adopted in Turkey, and therefore it has symbolic significance. It was previously said that the elections held in 2023 would be the last in which Erdogan would participate. In May of last year, Erdogan declared that he does not intend to run for another term in the next elections. Alongside this, he added that in his opinion, "there is still a need for a new constitution for Turkey." Erdogan has been serving as President of Turkey for more than 12 years, since he was first elected to the position on August 28, 2014. Previously, he served as the 26th Prime Minister of Turkey, starting on March 14, 2003, until his appointment as president.
