ANC suffers worst local election result, losing majority in most provinces
South Africa's ruling ANC party won about 31% of the vote in municipal elections, its lowest ever, down from about 46% in 2021. The party lost its majority in most provinces and cities, triggering coalition talks in seven of eight metropolitan municipalities.
South Africa's ruling party, the ANC, recorded its worst result in history in the local elections, with only 30.76% of the vote, a dramatic drop from 46% in 2021. The party, which leads the fight against Israel, lost its majority in most provinces and cities. President Ramaphosa said: "We accept the will of the people, however worrying it may be." The main reason for the decline, according to commentators, is poor services and inadequate infrastructure. The Democratic Alliance came in second with 24.64%, followed by Jacob Zuma's party with 9.76%.
