Iraq: Drone attack on gas field operated by UAE in Kurdistan Region
A booby-trapped drone attack on the 'Kormor' gas field in Iraqi Kurdistan, operated by the UAE's Dana Gas company, caused a fire and halted production, cutting off gas supplies to power stations. The expected drop in power generation is between 2,500 and 2,800 megawatts, with no casualties reported.
On Sunday evening, a booby-trapped drone targeted the 'Kormor' gas field in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, operated by the UAE's Dana Gas company, sparking a fire and halting production. The region's Ministries of Natural Resources and Electricity issued a joint statement declaring the attack 'terrorist' at 11:00 PM, without providing further details. A security source reported the attack was carried out by a 'booby-trapped drone,' with no group claiming responsibility. Two sources in the Ministry of Electricity said the drone struck a liquefied petroleum gas storage tank, causing a fire that continues to burn. Spokesperson for the regional electricity ministry, Omed Ahmed, stated that electricity production in the national grid will drop due to the halt in gas supplies, with total lost capacity estimated at 2,500 to 2,800 megawatts. The ministries confirmed they are taking measures to mitigate the impact on citizens' electricity supply hours. The same facility has been targeted by drone attacks several times in recent years.
