The reason for urgent consultations was a sharp deterioration in the situation in the southern Red Sea: the Houthis ousted Saudi-backed government forces from the port of Mokha, located 80 kilometers from the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Soon, Perim Island and the Hanish Archipelago came under the group's control. In parallel, the Houthis struck Saudi Aramco facilities in the cities of Abha, Najran, and Jizan, as well as an airbase in Khamis Mushait. The Israeli defense establishment emphasizes that the attempt to block one of the main sea routes poses a global-scale threat. The army is also preparing for a scenario in which Iran orders the Houthis to directly attack Israel. Egypt fears a decrease in traffic through the Suez Canal, and Saudi Arabia feels a lack of US response. The UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on September 15.
