Dr. Doron Dushnitzky, a pediatric expert from Leumit Health Services, was interviewed on 103FM and explained that the bacteria resides harmlessly in the throat of many people but can undergo a lethal change when it enters the body. The process, he said, is very short and can deteriorate into sepsis and multi-system failure. The first alarming sign, according to the expert, is a rash of round hemorrhages that does not disappear when pressed. Immediate antibiotic treatment at this stage may prevent deterioration. The expert emphasized that an effective vaccine exists against the bacteria, and that the Pediatric Association pushes to include it in the vaccine basket every year. As of publication, the vaccine is not included in the health basket but is offered by health funds through supplementary insurance. Dr. Dushnitzky recommended vaccinating children from two months of age.
