With more than 300 particles in one cup: the alarming figure revealed by a new study on the beloved noodles

A new study found microplastic particles in all 20 samples of instant noodles in disposable cups, with an average of about 318 particles per cup. Researchers estimate that frequent consumers may ingest over a thousand particles per week, but the experimental conditions included a significantly longer steeping time than usual.

A new study published in October 2026 in the Journal of Food Composition and Analysis found microplastic particles in all 20 samples of instant noodles in disposable cups purchased from China, Japan, South Korea, and Thailand. Researchers poured water at 95°C and found an average of about 318 particles per cup, including polyethylene and polypropylene. Based on the results, researchers estimated that frequent consumers may ingest over a thousand particles per week from this source alone. However, the experimental conditions included a 35-minute steeping time and repeated shaking, while standard preparation instructions call for 3-5 minutes. The FDA and EFSA note that existing evidence does not prove health harm at the levels found. The study raises a broader question about the impact of packaging materials on food.
