WHO: Half of Gaza's hospitals out of service, occupation prevents entry of medical equipment

The World Health Organization warned of a serious deterioration in the health system in Gaza, confirming that only 19 out of 36 hospitals are partially operational, with no hospital functioning at full capacity, amid a severe shortage of medicines, equipment, and fuel. Its representative noted that Israeli restrictions on the entry of equipment and medicines hinder the provision of essential services, and classify some as "dual-use".

The World Health Organization warned of a serious deterioration in the health system in the Gaza Strip, confirming that only 19 out of 36 hospitals are partially operational, while no hospital is functioning at full capacity, amid a severe shortage of medicines, medical equipment, and fuel. The organization's representative in Palestine, Renehilde van de Weerdt, said the health situation is "wretched and catastrophic," noting that restrictions on the entry of equipment and medicines hinder hospitals' ability to provide essential services. She added that the organization needs about four times the equipment that has been allowed in, especially specialized diagnostic devices. She explained that the arrival of trucks to the Strip does not necessarily mean the equipment reaches health facilities, as transporting it within Gaza requires approvals and security. She pointed out that the occupation authorities classify some essential medicines and medical equipment as "dual-use," impeding their entry. According to the organization's Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, cancer patients are unable to receive treatment, kidney patients face difficulties accessing regular dialysis sessions, while mothers and newborns face increased risks. The organization confirmed that thousands of injured suffer from life-changing injuries, including amputees needing rehabilitation services. It called for the rapid, sustainable, and unimpeded entry of supplies, the rehabilitation of health facilities, and the expansion of medical evacuations.
