What is the future of the Gaza Envelope and what is the future of the Gaza Strip?
Three years after October 7, 2023, and a year after the ceasefire agreement, Sever Plocker asks what the future holds for the Gaza Envelope and the Strip. He describes a lack of governmental answers, an unrealistic American document, and failed extreme solutions. The Palestinians have disappeared from the agenda, and the fear of another mass attack is high.
Three years after the massacre of October 7, 2023, and a year after the ceasefire and hostage return agreement, Sever Plocker asks what the future holds for the Gaza Envelope and the Gaza Strip. He argues that the government, which remains in place, has no answer, nor does the opposition. The only document outlining future contours was written by two Jewish-American businessmen serving Trump, and most of it is fantasy. At one end of the political spectrum, a complete Israeli disengagement and total closure are proposed, and at the other, annexation of the Strip and renewal of settlement – both solutions proven to have failed. Plocker notes that about 60% of the Strip's territory is under Israeli control, and asks how 2.3 million Gazans will live and who will be the sovereign. He describes a dire humanitarian situation with tents and rubble, aid that deepens dependency, and the takeover of its distribution by clans and gangs. The Palestinians, he says, have disappeared from the global agenda, and the Palestinian Authority led by an elderly president is not a significant factor. He notes that about 70% of Israelis fear another mass attack, and concludes with a warning of eternal war and eternal fear, quoting Moshe Dayan.
