The map changed overnight: Two new islands suddenly emerged from the sea
Indonesia's Anak Krakatau volcano has grown by approximately 32 dunams after violent eruptions. Satellite images revealed two new land formations near the volcano. The volcanic activity disrupted aviation in the area, with thousands of flights canceled and hundreds of thousands of passengers affected.
Indonesia's Anak Krakatau volcano has grown by approximately 32 dunams following massive lava flows that erupted continuously for about 25 hours. Satellite images comparing recent weeks' photos revealed a dramatic change in the terrain, along with two new land formations that appeared on both sides of the crater. Scientists are investigating whether this is a direct result of solidified lava or new eruption centers. The eruptions created volcanic ash clouds that reached Jakarta, forced airport closures, and disrupted the lives of more than 340,000 passengers. Nearly three thousand flights were canceled, delayed, or rerouted. Indonesia lies in the 'Ring of Fire' region and includes about 130 active volcanoes. The current volcano began growing about a hundred years ago at the site of a volcano that erupted in 1883, causing a deadly tsunami with more than 36,000 casualties.
