Wave of anti-Semitism in California, security around synagogues reinforced

In early September 2026, a series of anti-Semitic graffiti were spray-painted on a Reform synagogue, a church, and a public park in Ventura, California, between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. On the walls of Temple Beth Torah synagogue, 'Death to Jews' and 'You Will Be Judged' were spray-painted. On the nearby church, swastikas and 'Zionist traitors' were found, and in the park, a swastika and the phrase 'They want to replace you,' associated with the great replacement theory, were discovered. The Ventura Police Department is investigating the incidents as hate crimes and believes one person or group is behind all three. No arrests have been made. Police have increased patrols and presence around houses of worship. Police Chief David Dickey said the incidents are particularly concerning given the holiday season. Rabbi Lisa Hochberg-Miller said the community is shocked but feels widespread solidarity, noting this is the first anti-Semitic incident at the synagogue since 2019. Mayor Dr. Janet Sanchez-Palacios condemned the incident and is working to promote adoption of the IHRA definition of anti-Semitism.
