Adilson Marcaro, 48, from Brazil, arrived on Wednesday, October 21, at the São José cemetery in Linhares to attend the funeral of a friend killed in a car accident. After the ceremony, he went to visit his father's grave, located a few meters away. Marcaro sat on the tombstone, but the structure could not bear his weight and collapsed. He fell about three and a half meters and hit his head on the concrete walls. Medical and firefighting teams were called but could not save his life. The next day, on Thursday, Marcaro was laid to rest in the same family grave, next to his father. The municipality of Linhares announced it would place warning signs in the city's cemeteries. Firefighters explained that many tombstones are made of granite, which can crack and weaken over the years, and that maintenance of graves is the responsibility of families.
