IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir is waging a struggle against the political echelon over the appointment of the next deputy chief of staff. Zamir is working to promote Major General Uri Gordin, his close associate and former commander of the Northern Command, to the position. According to information that reached News 14, Gordin already enjoys an unusual status in the Chief of Staff's environment: an office in his bureau, participation in senior meetings, a seat next to Zamir in the General Staff forum, and temporary roles created for him – allegedly without approval from the political echelon. On the other hand, the government prefers Major General Yaniv Asor, who according to testimonies has tense relations with Zamir. The tension between the Chief of Staff and the political echelon is reaching new heights, and harsh voices against Zamir are heard at the top of the government. Senior officials say that the possibility of ending the Chief of Staff's term after the upcoming elections is being seriously considered, if the right remains in power, due to a major breakdown of trust with him. The IDF Spokesperson responded that Gordin was appointed to coordinate the process of learning and drawing lessons from the war, and that he does not have an office in the Chief of Staff's bureau complex.
