Political commentator Amit Segal, in an op-ed for Israel Hayom, warns that after Donald Trump's presidential term ends, Israel may face serious international pressure over the Palestinian issue. In his assessment, the country has about two years left to change the situation in the Gaza Strip and create conditions that will allow it to avoid a new diplomatic confrontation with Western states. Segal notes that the Israeli election campaign practically does not address the strategic decisions on which the country's position after January 2029 will depend. If the Democratic Party candidate wins the next US presidential election, he says, recognition of a Palestinian state, restrictions on imports of products from Israeli settlements, and personal sanctions against individual politicians are possible. Segal considers the Gaza Strip the key area: the plan for the territory's post-war arrangement proposed by Trump creates an opportunity to abandon previous approaches based on the Oslo agreements. This concerns the formation of a new governance system independent of both Hamas and the Palestinian Authority, as well as demilitarization and reconstruction of infrastructure. However, practical progress on the initiative has stalled because of the protracted process of returning the bodies of hostages, the military operation against Iran, and the start of the election campaign in Israel. Segal also criticizes the absence of a full-fledged discussion about the future of the Palestinian territories among leading Israeli politicians.
