The race to the top of the UN: The Jewish candidate leads the preliminary votes

Following her is Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett from Guyana. Israel's UN Ambassador Danny Danon called on candidates to present a plan to combat antisemitism.

The race for the next UN Secretary-General advanced another step with a preliminary round of voting in the Security Council. The Jewish candidate Rebecca Greenspan from Costa Rica, an economist and former vice president, leads with 9 votes in favor, 5 against, and one abstention. Following her is Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett from Guyana with 8 in favor, 6 against, and one abstention. Other candidates, including Olara Otunnu from Uganda, Rafael Grossi from Argentina, Maki Sall from Senegal, Maria Fernanda Espinosa from Ecuador, Michelle Bachelet from Chile, and Ivonne Baki from Ecuador, received lower support. In the previous round four weeks ago, the candidate from Guyana was leading. Israel's UN Ambassador Danny Danon commented on the vote and called on candidates to present a detailed plan to combat antisemitism at the UN, warning against a repeat of the "antisemitic celebration" from the Guterres era.
