A new report by the US Congressional Research Service (CRS) reveals that at least 81 US military aircraft have been lost or damaged since the outbreak of the war against Iran at the end of February. The list of casualties prominently includes 12 F-15E Strike Eagle aircraft, three of which were accidentally shot down by friendly fire over Kuwait on March 2, and one was shot down over Iran. Eight more were lightly damaged in Iranian attacks on a base in Jordan in early September but were repaired and returned to service. The drone fleet suffered a severe blow with the loss of at least 45 MQ-9 Reaper aircraft, leaving only 135 aircraft – below the minimum target of 189. An F-35A stealth fighter, worth over $92 million, was hit by Iranian fire on March 19. Additionally, the loss of an E-3 Sentry command and control aircraft worth $270 million was reported, along with damage to KC-135 refueling aircraft, MC-130J aircraft, a combat rescue helicopter, maritime surveillance drones, and Apache and Heli Bird helicopters. The total cost is estimated at approximately $3.3 billion, but does not include ancillary costs of flight hours, munitions, maintenance, and base protection. The report paints a picture of ongoing attrition in American air power.
