Left candidate for mayor of Berlin, Elif Arap, expressed concern about elements with ties to Hamas within her party, as the cloud of anti-Semitism in the party threatens coalition talks with the Greens and the Social Democrats. Chancellor Merz tried to prevent her election. In an interview with the German news agency, Arap estimated that her party would approve the opening of talks by a large majority, and admitted that the preliminary understandings include painful compromises. She noted that the Left won 25.7% of the vote. The three parties completed exploratory talks on October 17. The emerging coalition will have 91 seats in the local parliament, 14 more than needed for an absolute majority. An alternative coalition of the Christian Democrats, Greens, and Social Democrats is possible but its majority would be much smaller. The partners are advancing a plan to transfer about 160,000 apartments to public ownership.
