Riding a scooter in Tel Aviv? The mistake that could cost you 500 shekels

The Tel Aviv-Yafo Municipality has intensified enforcement against illegal riding of electric scooters and bicycles. In August, 642 vehicles were confiscated and 7,667 fines were issued. The fine for failing to install a license plate has risen to 500 shekels, and riders also risk having their vehicle confiscated.

The Tel Aviv-Yafo Municipality has significantly intensified enforcement against illegal riding of electric scooters and bicycles. During the summer months, the municipal supervision department, in cooperation with the SL"A and SHF"A departments and the Israel Police, carried out increased enforcement activities throughout the city. In August, 642 vehicles were confiscated and 7,667 fines were issued, an increase compared to July (484 confiscations, 6,040 fines) and June (520 confiscations, 4,450 fines). For comparison, in all of 2025, 2,460 vehicles were caught and 55,000 fines were issued. The fine for failing to install a license plate rose from 100 to 500 shekels as of September 1, 2025. In addition to the fine, owners of vehicles that did not install a license plate risk confiscation of the vehicle, which involves an additional financial charge. The municipality notes that Tel Aviv-Yafo was the first authority to lead legislation allowing enforcement on issues such as failure to install a license plate, failure to use a helmet, and riding on the sidewalk. Alongside enforcement, efforts to improve infrastructure, awareness, and education continue.
