Harvey Weinstein sentenced to 15 additional years in prison for sexual assault in New York

The sentence was handed down after a retrial, following the overturning of his 2020 conviction. His defense attorneys cited his deteriorating health and sought leniency, but the judge imposed a lengthy sentence.

Film producer Harvey Weinstein, 74, was sentenced today (Wednesday) to an additional 15 years in prison in a New York court for a serious sex crime he committed in 2006. The sentence came after a convoluted legal process spanning more than six years, during which his original 2020 conviction was overturned by the state's highest appeals court, until a jury found him guilty again in a retrial. Weinstein, who has already served more than six years in prison and is awaiting a resentencing in a separate rape case in Los Angeles, sexually assaulted former television production assistant Miriam Haley in his Manhattan apartment. Before the sentence was read, Haley addressed the court and described the deep scars from the producer's actions: "Being sexually assaulted by Harvey Weinstein has had a devastating impact on my life and my sense of security, which may never return. The decision to speak out will make me look over my shoulder for many years to come. It is a life sentence for me." Weinstein's attorneys asked for an additional three years in prison, arguing that a lengthy sentence would lead to his death behind bars due to a severe deterioration in his medical condition. Attorney Jacob Kaplan noted that Weinstein, currently hospitalized in the medical ward for inmates at Bellevue Hospital, suffers from chronic myeloid leukemia, heart failure, kidney problems, and diabetes. The Manhattan prosecution, however, demanded a 20-year sentence. The current proceeding was made possible after the New York Court of Appeals overturned his 2020 conviction in 2024, which had carried a 23-year sentence, ruling that his rights were violated by allowing testimony from women not included in the indictment. In the retrial, Weinstein was again convicted of first-degree criminal sexual act against Haley, but acquitted of another assault charge.
