Carrefour supermarket chain is ending its participation in the government's "Sal Israel" program on October 14, 2026, leading to price increases on 112 popular products. The program, launched on April 15, 2026, fixed prices on basic products — bread, rice, pasta, dairy products, grains, olive oil, tahini, baby products, and hygiene products — at a significantly lower level. Initially, a basket of 100 products cost 1,098 shekels compared to 1,700 shekels before the project launched. According to the Ministry of Economy, prices at Carrefour were on average 32.5% lower than at competing chains. During the project's operation, shoppers saved about 40 million shekels. However, maintaining such prices proved financially unviable for Carrefour: the chain attracted additional customers but faced reduced profitability. After October 14, Carrefour is launching its own Carrefour Special Deal system across all 144 stores and online, which does not include commitments to previous prices. The exact size of the increase is not yet known. A Tel Aviv University study showed that simultaneously with the decrease in prices of items from the government basket, some other categories at Carrefour became more expensive — increases were recorded in 46 of the 76 categories studied.
