A New York Times investigation, co-authored by Yedioth Ahronoth journalist Ronen Bergman, confirms that UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed (MBZ) warned Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of a major attack Hamas was considering carrying out. The conversation took place in late September 2023, about two and a half weeks before the October 7 massacre. The investigation is based on five former senior Israeli officials, a source who spoke with bin Zayed, and another source briefed on the conversation. According to the investigation, Netanyahu did not pass the warning on to senior security officials. In a security discussion he convened on October 1, 2023, with heads of the security establishment, Netanyahu did not mention the warning at all. Instead, he said the goal should be to maintain quiet in Gaza and expressed opposition to a proposal to consider military attacks against senior Hamas figures. Netanyahu argued that action in Gaza could undermine his efforts to reach a normalization agreement with Saudi Arabia. Netanyahu strongly denies the conversation took place. The UAE refused to issue a clear denial of the original report.
