A surprise raid by Indonesia's Ombudsman on Cibinong prison, near Jakarta, uncovered a separate residential compound with at least ten well-appointed apartment units. Footage released by investigators showed spacious bedrooms, large beds, seating areas, dining tables, appliances, giant TVs, luxury cars, a gym, and even a golf simulator. Some rooms contained alcoholic beverages, including whiskey and beer. An unlocked rear exit gate leading to a wooded area away from the main entrance was also identified. The buildings were originally intended for prison staff housing, but are suspected of being converted for inmate accommodation in exchange for payment. During the raid, investigators tried to enter one unit, but a person inside locked the door, preventing entry. Five prison officials, including the facility's director, have been suspended. 52 inmates are being investigated in the case. Ten of the illegal structures have already been demolished. The affair has sparked public outrage in Indonesia and reignited debate over corruption in the prison system. Experts noted that similar cases of wealthy inmates purchasing special conditions have been exposed in the past, but the scale of the facilities found this time made the case exceptional.
