On the way to a scandal? The team was promoted – and violated UEFA regulations

Sevastopol from the Crimean peninsula was promoted to the third professional league in Russia, in violation of UEFA regulations prohibiting clubs from Crimea from participating in Russian competitions. UEFA and FIFA face a dilemma: impose harsh sanctions or turn a blind eye.

Sevastopol, a club from the Crimean peninsula, has been promoted to Russia's third professional league, a move that violates UEFA regulations barring Crimean clubs from taking part in competitions organized by the Russian Football Union. UEFA and FIFA now face a dilemma: either punish Russia severely or ignore the violation and risk heavy criticism. This step could lead to Russia's complete exclusion from international football. In 2023, Sevastopol and another Crimean club were admitted to the fourth tier, which the Russian Football Union claimed was an amateur league, and UEFA and FIFA chose to overlook it. Now, the third league is professional, leaving no room for maneuver. The Ukrainian Football Association warned of a "coordinated political attempt to legitimize the occupation." As of now, no official body has responded.
