The Swedish Academy announced today (Thursday) that the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature will be awarded to Canadian writer, poet, translator, and literary scholar Anne Carson. The prize citation states it is awarded to her "for her bold and inventive body of work, which has created new forms for contemporary literature through a playful dialogue with the classical tradition." Carson, born in 1950 in Toronto, has been considered one of the most prominent and influential figures in international literature and art since the 1990s. The prize committee, chaired by Anders Olsson, praised her work, which combines philology, etymological research, and modern poetry while blurring the boundaries between literary genres. Among her highlighted works are the verse novel "Autobiography of Red" (1998), "The Beauty of the Husband" (2001), the visual-elegiac work "Nox" (2010), and her translations of Sappho's poetry and the tragedies of Sophocles and Euripides.
