New York Times: "Netanyahu recently pushed to attack Iran, Zamir blocked. The option still exists"

The New York Times reported that Prime Minister Netanyahu tried to push for an attack on Iran in recent weeks, but Chief of Staff Zamir opposed it due to fears of miscalculation with Tehran during the election period. The newspaper added that the possibility of resuming fighting still exists.

The New York Times reported yesterday (Monday) that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tried to push for an attack on Iran in recent weeks but faced opposition from Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir. According to the report, which relies on three senior security officials and three sources briefed on the matter, Zamir opposed Netanyahu's intentions to carry out an operation in Iran—including a covert attack—due to fears of miscalculation with Tehran during the sensitive period of the Knesset elections. The newspaper added that resuming hostilities in the near future is still on the table, and that another war with Iran could encourage the formation of a unity government led by Netanyahu. In additional reports, CNN cited an Israeli security official who said Netanyahu tried to convince US President Donald Trump to carry out a joint attack, but Trump did not give a green light. The Prime Minister's Office responded to the reports, calling them 'fake news.'
