The UN Refugee Agency announced that the number of displaced people due to the escalating fighting in Yemen has exceeded 281,000, noting that the number continues to rise weekly. This figure adds to over 5.2 million displaced people who were inside the country before the recent escalation. This came in a written response from the agency's spokesperson, Babar Baloch, to questions about the continued rise in displacement numbers and access to the city of Taiz in southwestern Yemen. Baloch said that displacement numbers are constantly increasing due to the intensification of fighting and its spread to new fronts. He pointed out that the fighting and deteriorating security situation in Taiz and its surroundings prevent access to the area, and have also led to the cutting of main roads. He added that the agency has no field staff in Taiz, and that a partner organization in the city has very limited activities due to the deteriorating security conditions. He confirmed that the situation in Yemen is rapidly changing and that data changes according to field developments day by day.
