New scam in Israel: 'She promised she would marry me'

Israeli men are losing tens of thousands of dollars as victims of a romance scam: women from Ghana promise love and marriage, extort money, and then disappear. Total damages have exceeded one million dollars.

Dozens of Israeli men have fallen victim to a romance scam orchestrated by women from Ghana. The scammers meet victims on social media, shower them with compliments, promise marriage and relocation to Israel, and then under various pretexts extort money. A 60-year-old teacher from central Israel transferred about $50,000, withdrawing it from a savings account. A 70-year-old man from the south of the country lost $70,000 over six months. Another victim from Netanya lost $80,000. The total amount of stolen funds has exceeded one million dollars. The police acknowledge that achieving justice is difficult due to the international nature of the crime. The scenario repeats: meeting on Messenger, compliments, stories about financial difficulties, promises to come and start a family, and after receiving large transfers — blocking and disappearance.
