US intelligence agencies have disclosed information about a new generation of AI-powered bots that operate fully autonomously: they create fake profiles, write posts, and engage in political arguments on social media without any human intervention. According to The New York Times, published on September 18, Iran, China, and private Israeli companies, particularly Tel Aviv-based IntelEye, founded by former NSO employees, have begun using such systems. IntelEye managed approximately 1,000 fake accounts that interfered in political discussions in Israel, spreading content both in support of and against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, although the company claimed it was a research experiment. A September 2026 report by the company Anthropic describes agentic systems capable of independently executing long chains of actions: gathering information, analyzing people, creating virtual personas, and adapting to interlocutors' responses. This is a fundamental difference from old bot farms: now the operator sets a goal, and a set of AI personas independently reads what is happening, enters conversations, changes arguments, and interacts with other accounts, creating the illusion of mass support for a particular opinion.
