More than 90% of water and sanitation facilities in Gaza damaged or destroyed

Director General of Water Resources at the Water Authority and Environmental Quality, Dr. Munther Salem, warns of the worsening water and sanitation crisis in the Gaza Strip, with more than 90% of related facilities and infrastructure damaged or destroyed, and the per capita water share dropping to less than 6 liters per day, with about 1.5 million displaced people living in tents.

The Director General of Water Resources at the Water Authority and Environmental Quality, Dr. Munther Salem, warned of the worsening water and sanitation crisis in the Gaza Strip, with more than 90% of related facilities and infrastructure completely or partially damaged or destroyed. Salem explained in press statements that some facilities were bombed and destroyed multiple times, exacerbating the difficulty of providing water to the population. He noted that the daily per capita water share has dropped to less than 6 liters, and that only about 30 liters are available for a family of five, an amount far below World Health Organization standards. He pointed out that about 1.5 million displaced people living in tents suffer from a lack of water storage capacity and irregular supply deliveries. He stressed that water shortages and the accumulation of excess water in open areas contribute to the spread of diseases and the proliferation of rodents and mosquitoes, exposing children to severe health risks. Salem called on international institutions to take urgent action to end the humanitarian catastrophe.
