The leader of the Jewish community in Indonesia, Yaakov Baruch, claims that Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto's recent calls to "liberate Palestine" are a domestic political move aimed at diverting attention from growing public criticism of his performance on the domestic front and allegations of corruption. Baruch made the remarks in an interview with Kan News, following the president's statement at an event at an Islamic educational institution in the presence of Palestinian diplomatic representatives. According to him, the president sought to win support from Indonesians disappointed with his policies, and thereby succeeded in diverting attention from the criticism. Baruch noted that in the past, the president held a more moderate stance at the UN, emphasizing the need to ensure Israel's safety and security. Despite the current shift, Baruch remains optimistic and argues that normalization with Israel is still possible, at least on the civilian level, through cooperation in technology, business, and interfaith dialogue. He added that there have never been military conflicts between the two countries, and that the hatred stems from an antisemitism campaign on social media.
