Latvian Defense Minister Raivis Melnis, in an exclusive interview with The Jerusalem Post on Thursday, declared Israeli weapons "top-notch" and reaffirmed Latvia's support for Israel's right to self-defense. The visit, which included meetings with Defense Minister Israel Katz and top Israeli defense firms Rafael, Elbit, and Israel Aerospace Industries, focused on potential arms purchases. Latvia is exploring the acquisition of the Iron Dome system, loitering munitions, artillery, and radar systems to address drone threats spilling over from the Russia-Ukraine war. Melnis expressed hope that delivery of systems would take "much less than three years." He also condemned Iranian attacks on Israel and noted that Iran is an enemy to both Israel and Ukraine. Despite the NAZA film harming Israel's reputation, Melnis said he wanted to show solidarity. The visit carries political weight ahead of elections in both countries. Latvia has previously purchased Israeli arms, including Rafael's Spike missiles and Elbit's turret systems.
