Killed two in a fatal car accident - and will be released from prison after less than a year
The parole board ordered the shortening of the sentence of Khaled Mahamid from Umm al-Fahm, who was convicted of causing death by negligence of two workers in a car accident in 2019 and sentenced to 18 months in prison. He will be released after only 11 months, under restrictive conditions. The board justified the decision by his confession, remorse, and positive functioning in prison.
The parole board at Tzalmon prison, headed by retired judge Ronit Bash, ordered the early release of Khaled Mahamid, 34, from Umm al-Fahm, after serving 11 months of an 18-month prison sentence. Mahamid was convicted of causing death by negligence of two workers, Younes Haraz and Sami Yassin, and injuring five others in a fatal car accident that occurred on December 22, 2019, in the Aluf Sadeh tunnel. Mahamid, who worked as a shuttle driver, veered from his lane and collided forcefully with the rear of a truck standing on the side of the road with warning lights on. The indictment noted that road conditions were normal and visibility was good. The prosecution opposed early release due to the severity of the offense, but the police did not object. The board justified its decision by Mahamid's confession, sincere remorse, positive functioning in prison, and payment of the compensation imposed on him. He will be released under restrictive conditions including reporting to the police station and a travel ban.
