Residents in Nof HaGalil, Harish, Zikhron Yaakov, and other northern communities describe a recurring nuisance of severe air pollution originating from waste fires in Arab villages, some beyond the Green Line. Residents report a sharp smell of burning plastic, closing windows in the evening, fear of health damage, and a sense of despair over the lack of effective treatment. A resident from Nof HaGalil documents the fires and reports to the "Citizens for Clean Air" association. A resident of Harish says the smell returns evening after evening. A resident of Zikhron Yaakov attributes headaches and weakness to the pollution. Yaniv Bleicher, CEO of the association, explains that the fires result from irregular waste collection, cost savings, and sometimes threats from criminal elements. The association has collected about 25,000 reports in two and a half years. Bleicher demands deterrent enforcement and accessible treatment and recycling infrastructure. The Israel Police stated that the Green Police are acting against the phenomenon. A response from the Ministry of Environmental Protection has not yet been received.
