Israel will come to a standstill on Yom Kippur: when transport will stop

Israel is preparing for a complete halt of public transportation on Yom Kippur. Bus, train, and tram services will begin to reduce on September 20, with the last departures leaving before 15:00. Railway service will resume later than others — on the night of September 22.

Israel is preparing for a complete halt of public transportation on Yom Kippur, which will last from the evening of September 20 to the evening of September 21. City and intercity bus services will begin to reduce on Sunday, September 20, mainly between 13:00 and 15:00. The exact time of the last departures depends on the route and the carrier. Trams will also stop gradually, with the last departures around 13:00–14:00. Tram service is scheduled to resume on the evening of Monday, September 21, approximately from 21:30. Israel Railways will operate on a special Friday schedule on September 20, with passenger trains continuing until about 13:00. On the Haifa–Tel Aviv line, frequency will increase to two trains per hour. After the Sunday services end, railway traffic will be completely suspended for the holiday. Unlike buses and trams, passenger trains will not return to service immediately after the fast ends on the evening of September 21. Their service will resume on the night from Monday to Tuesday, September 22, including night trains. Bus service will begin to recover after the holiday according to the schedules of individual carriers, but the return of transport to routes will not be simultaneous. Passengers are advised to plan their trips in advance and check the departure times of their required services.
