Israel's schools reopen after holidays - who is allowed to stay home
Most Israeli students return to school on Sunday, October 4, after the Tishrei holidays. Students in grades 10–12 will return a day later, on Monday, October 5, due to differences in labor agreements between teachers' organizations that regulate teacher work schedules.
Most Israeli students return to school on Sunday, October 4, after the extended Tishrei holidays. However, high school students in grades 10–12 will have an extra day off and return only on Monday, October 5. The scheduling difference is not due to individual school decisions but to labor agreements between teachers' organizations that set different work schedules for teachers. On Sunday, classes will resume in kindergartens, elementary schools, and middle schools. The discrepancies arise from agreements with the Teachers' Union and the Organization of High School Teachers, which separately regulate working and off days for different categories of educators. The calendar was also affected by arrangements regarding the "bridge" between Yom Kippur and Sukkot, which redistributed working days across several periods of the school year. The current agreement with the Teachers' Union was signed in 2022, and when a new agreement is negotiated, the parties will be able to reconsider the distribution of off days.
