iOS 27 doubles storage requirements for AI features on some iPhone models
Apple has released iOS 27, which doubles the storage requirements for AI features on some newer iPhone models. Models such as the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo require 14 GB of free space, while most other devices still need 8 GB. The increase is linked to support for two advanced features: customizing Siri AI voice and improving dictation accuracy.
Apple has recently released iOS 27, which includes extensive updates to AI features within the Apple Intelligence ecosystem. While most supported iPhone models maintain the previous storage requirement of 8 GB, some newer models require up to 14 GB of free storage, nearly double the previously required space. Devices requiring this space include the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone Duo foldable, as well as the iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air. The requirement also reaches 14 GB on some iPads and Macs that support advanced AI models, along with the Apple Vision Pro. The increase in storage requirements is linked to support for two advanced AI features not available on other models: customizing Siri AI voice in terms of expression and speech speed, and improving dictation accuracy. These features require the use of Apple's most powerful on-device AI model (AFM Core Advanced), leading to additional storage consumption. Apple has not confirmed that this specific model is responsible for the extra consumption.
