A study by the cybersecurity company ReasonLabs uncovered an international fraud network that impersonates the Israel Police via SMS messages. The messages threaten recipients that an unpaid traffic ticket will be forwarded to the traffic court within 24 hours, and the attached link leads to a fake website that almost exactly copied the traffic ticket payment service on the government website gov.il. The researchers identified three websites that were registered and activated on the same day in September, and some of the messages were sent from phone numbers originating in India and Uruguay. The infrastructure is linked to a broad fraud system also operating from China, which impersonates government agencies in the US, UK, and Canada. The National Cyber Directorate recommends not clicking on links in suspicious messages and reporting to the 119 hotline.
