A 17-year-old student stabbed her math teacher inside a classroom at a school in Brazil, in an incident captured on security camera. The attack occurred on September 11 at Dr. Gerson dos Santos Peres State School in the city of Cametá, in the northern state of Pará. The footage shows the student standing by the teacher's desk, next to teacher Betânia de Almeida Perestes, while the two are alone in the classroom. After a few moments, she pulls out a hunting knife and lunges at the teacher. Perestes managed to dodge the first blow and tried to grab the knife, but the student stabbed her in the back and nearly hit her face. The teacher managed to break free and run to call for help. Police arrested the student at the scene; the knife was found in a classroom trash can. In her interrogation, the girl said she attacked because she didn't like the teacher. The teacher was taken to the hospital; a CT scan showed the blade did not hit vital organs, and she was released after observation. Due to her age, the student's name was not published. A local lawyer explained that under Brazilian law, the girl could be charged with an offense equivalent to attempted murder and face educational-rehabilitative measures, which may include detention in a closed facility. The Union of Public Education Workers in Pará condemned the attack.
