Eight Jewish families are expected to move into eight buildings purchased in Jericho by the Nahala movement, in cooperation with the Binyamin Council. The move, kept secret until the last moment, is intended to establish the first Jewish neighborhood in the Palestinian city, outside of Hebron. The families' entry is being carried out in a specially planned operation, coordinated with the Binyamin Council but without coordination with other parties. At the same time, the new settlement of Diya is rising with 10 caravans in the area of the Hasmonean palaces. Jericho is a large Palestinian city in the Jordan Valley, and since the Hasmonean period no Jews have lived there. The article reviews previous settlement attempts that failed, including the Jericho nucleus in the 1970s, and notes that the current move seeks to open a new chapter in Jewish settlement in the area.
