Grand Mufti calls for paying zakat on olives and olive oil
The Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and the Palestinian Territories, Sheikh Muhammad Hussein, called for paying zakat on olives to those entitled to it, coinciding with the harvest season, clarifying that the nisab is 653 kg of olives or the equivalent in oil, with a zakat rate of 10% for rain-irrigated crops and 5% for other irrigation methods, and condemned attacks on land.
The Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and the Palestinian Territories, Sheikh Muhammad Hussein, called for paying zakat on olives to those entitled to it, coinciding with the olive harvest season. In a statement, he explained that the nisab for zakat on olives is estimated at 653 kilograms of olives, or the equivalent amount of oil produced from them after pressing. He stated that anyone whose crop reaches the nisab must pay 10% as zakat if the olives are rain-fed, and 5% if irrigated by other means. He emphasized the importance of caring for agricultural land and preserving it, holding onto it as a land of fertility, goodness, and a homeland for generations. He condemned attacks targeting olive groves, including theft, uprooting and burning trees, terrorizing farmers, and preventing them from accessing their land and harvesting their fruit. He praised the steadfastness of the Palestinian farmer who remains on his land despite all difficulties and challenges.
