Saudi Arabia is preparing for a broad military operation against the Houthis in Yemen, according to a report by the Reuters news agency. Six sources in the region and the West said Riyadh plans to act in the coming weeks. The two main options under consideration are securing the shipping lane in the Red Sea or an attack on several fronts. The operation is expected to be carried out by Yemeni forces, with support from Riyadh and assistance from airstrikes. The report comes against the backdrop of an attack attributed by officials to the Houthis, which struck the Tiba power distribution station in the city of Medina, the second holiest in Islam. Saudi coalition spokesman Turki al-Maliki said the attack caused a transformer to shut down, but the power grid itself was not damaged. He accused the Houthis of attempting to harm the two holy mosques and deliberately inciting Muslim sentiments. In contrast, the Houthi-affiliated Saba news agency denied the claims. Bahrain, the UAE, and Jordan condemned the attacks.
