Fear of Iranian takeover: Widespread wave of arrests in Bahrain

Bahraini authorities have arrested more than 50 Shia clerics on suspicion of ties to Iran's Revolutionary Guards, and revoked the citizenship of 69 individuals of Iranian origin, amid fears of an Iranian takeover following attacks on the country.

Bahraini authorities have launched a widespread wave of arrests against Shia clerics amid fears of Iranian influence in the country. More than 50 clerics were arrested on suspicion of anti-government activity, and the citizenship of 69 individuals of Iranian origin was revoked, according to Reuters. The head of the Public Security Agency, General Tariq Al-Hassan, said that Bahrain is facing an ideology that demands loyalty to Iran's leadership over the sovereign authority of the state. Iranian attacks on Bahrain have raised serious concerns among security officials, especially given the precision with which targets were hit, including a hotel where American military personnel who had fled their base were staying. Bahrain suspects that local elements assisted in directing the attacks. About 12 people were sentenced to prison terms of five to ten years after being convicted of expressing support for the attacks. Between May and June, more than 50 clerics were arrested on suspicion of attempting to operate a terrorist organization with the help of Iran's Revolutionary Guards. In contrast, 20 human rights organizations allege torture, forced confessions, and human rights violations.
