The Ethiopian army has taken control of the Tigray region in the north of the country, after rebel groups withdrew. The main rebel group, the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), surrendered and was cleared from the area, following a widespread attack aimed at overthrowing Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. The attack, which began in late September, was repelled by forces loyal to the government that made extensive use of drones. The front, which was once the ruling party, is facing angry reactions from its former supporters due to its alliance with Eritrea, which brought back memories of atrocities during the civil war in 2022. A resident of the region told French media that cooperation with Eritrean forces was a serious mistake, and that the front had lost the support of the region's residents.
