Ethiopia officially confirmed today (Friday) that Eritrean military forces have invaded its territory, amid the ongoing escalation against rebels in the Tigray region. Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timotheos, who met yesterday with the UN Deputy Secretary-General, called on the UN to respond to Eritrea's "ongoing aggression" and its immediate withdrawal from the area. According to reports, Ethiopia responded to the invasion with drone strikes. Eritrea denies the invasion and claims that this is an attempt by Addis Ababa to justify an attack against it. On October 1, Eritrea severed its relations with Ethiopia. On Wednesday, it was reported that Eritrean forces had been in the area for four days in the Tigray region, carrying heavy weapons. The current clashes erupted after the collapse of the "Pretoria Agreement" last week, following a coordinated attack by forces from the Tigray region against federal government forces. The agreement, signed in November 2022, ended the previous civil war that claimed hundreds of thousands of victims and left hundreds of thousands displaced. The fighting led to Tigray forces taking control of the airport in Mekelle and additional fields in the region. Ethiopian Airlines suspended flights to the region, and flights to Lalibela were also halted. Israelis are in the besieged area in the Amhara region.
