Turkey and South Korea have signed a memorandum for cooperation in financing nuclear energy projects, aiming to promote the participation of South Korean companies in building new power plants in Turkey. The agreement was reached at a summit between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and South Korean President Lee Jae-myung in Seoul, during Erdogan's first state visit to the country in eight years. At the center of the cooperation is the planned Sinop nuclear power plant on the Black Sea coast in northern Turkey, intended to be the country's second nuclear power plant. Lee stated that cooperation on the Sinop project, including site surveys and the work of the joint task force, is progressing well. Alongside nuclear energy, the leaders agreed to expand defense cooperation, including joint production, technology exchanges, and activities in additional markets, citing the Turkish Altay main battle tank as an example of existing partnership. Erdogan and Lee also discussed the war in Ukraine and conflicts in the Middle East, agreeing to maintain close communication and coordination.
