"Draconian conditions": Urgent demand to Zini after arrest of security personnel

MK Zvi Sukkot sent an urgent letter to Shin Bet chief David Zini demanding that two security personnel from the West Bank—a community security coordinator who is a bereaved brother and a career IDF officer—be allowed to meet with their lawyers. Sukkot criticized their interrogation conditions, which he called "draconian," and claimed they are harsher than those of crime bosses and senior murderers.

MK Zvi Sukkot, chairman of the Subcommittee on Judea and Samaria Affairs, sent an urgent letter to Shin Bet chief David Zini demanding that two security personnel from the West Bank be allowed to meet with their lawyers. The detainees are a community security coordinator, a bereaved brother responsible for protecting his community's residents, and a career IDF officer, arrested on Saturday night, October 10. In his letter, Sukkot emphasized that preventing a meeting with a lawyer is not a routine investigative measure but a harsh and harmful step requiring substantial justification. He cited Supreme Court rulings recognizing a detainee's right to meet with a lawyer and demanded that the necessity of the prevention be examined for each detainee individually. Sukkot argued that it is unacceptable for security personnel and officers to face interrogation conditions far more severe and draconian than those of crime family leaders and senior murderers, concluding that state security and the protection of fundamental rights are not conflicting values.
