"Disgusting": Boris Johnson and experts react to US-Russia deal
Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson called the US decision to lift sanctions on Russian fuel "disgusting" and criticized attempts to blame Ukraine for rising energy prices. Experts and politicians oppose easing sanctions pressure on Russia.
Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson sharply criticized the US administration's decision to lift sanctions on Russian fuel, calling it "disgusting." He also rejected attempts to blame Ukraine for the global rise in energy costs, noting that the price surge began with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Johnson emphasized that the only reliable path to market stability remains full support for Ukraine's sovereignty, and that the return of Russian energy resources should only occur after the war ends. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump's team is preparing a massive raw materials contract with the Kremlin, which, according to Bild, could bring Russia billions of dollars. The plan involves sending up to 4.8 million tons of diesel to the US. The expert community, particularly ifo Institute head Clemens Fuest, expresses skepticism about the deal's effectiveness, doubting Russia's ability to fulfill its obligations due to fuel shortages and strikes on refineries. Official Berlin stated that the EU's position on sanctions remains unchanged.
