Discovery in the depths of the sea: Ancient ring reveals one of the Seven Wonders of the World
A bronze seal ring engraved with the famous Lighthouse of Alexandria was discovered in the sunken port of the city. Researchers estimate it was used for signing documents and sealing jars. The find provides a glimpse into the appearance of one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, which was destroyed by earthquakes.
Researchers from Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities and the European Institute for Underwater Archaeology discovered a bronze seal ring in the eastern port of Alexandria. The ring bears an engraving of the famous Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The ring served as a practical tool for sealing letters, jars, and authenticating documents. Archaeologist Hisham El-Leithy noted that the shape of the lighthouse on the ring resembles its depiction on coins from the second century AD. The lighthouse, built between 284 and 297 BC and standing 122 meters tall, was destroyed by earthquakes in 1303 and 1323 AD. Its remains still lie on the harbor floor. The find bridges the gap between major architectural evidence and the daily life of the ancient city's inhabitants.
